Tub drains can be very tricky to deal with. You may not realize this, but tub drains can actually be replaced without replacing the entire bathtub. Reasons to replace your tub drain include if it is cracked or you simply want a new finish on the tub drain. Mostly, here at Atlanta Plumbing we recommend that you call us to help you with such a project. Our residential plumbing professionals already have all of the correct tools and know exactly how to deal with such a task. If you do feel like you will be able to tackle the job yourself, here is some helpful information on what type of tool you will need and how to use it without professional plumbing services. First and foremost, if you are looking to purchase a tub drain removal tool you will want to make sure you get a metal one. These are the only ones that are really strong enough to tackle such a job. Most of the other forms will break from so much force. These tools have a hexagon shaped body. This is so that it can fit snugly into your drain. They are also mostly a standard size of one and a half inches, but many are able to expand further if you happen to have a larger drain. These tools also come in two different forms. One is meant to simply be attached to your wrench. Another popular model has a small hole in it where you insert your screwdriver. You then use force to twist the screwdriver which will then twist the removal tool. When using such a tool, you want to make sure that it has a snug fit on your drain opening. If the fit is not snug then it will not be able to grab the sides of the drain and pull it out. You will also want to make sure that if you are using the type that attaches to a wrench, you also make sure it is firmly on. You will not want it coming off of the wrench right when you think you got it. Once the tool is placed into the drain you will want to turn it counterclockwise until the drain lifts out. Once the old drain is removed, you can simply place the new drain in and turn the tool clockwise until the drain is snug. Make sure it is fit tightly otherwise you will have to deal with leaks. It may sound quite simple to remove your tub drain, but in all actuality it requires a lot of work. You need to put a lot of force on the tool to make sure that it turns the drain out. You also need to make sure that the tool is fit snugly otherwise it will just end up scratching the metal and not moving it an inch.
